Factors Influencing Type of Cigarette Smoked among Adolescents: Focusing on the Differences between Conventional Cigarette and Electronic Cigarett

Abstract
Even though a large number of studies have reported the harm of e-cigarettes, the prevalence of use of e-cigarettes have been increasing. E-cigarette companies try to attract adolescents to by claiming that e-cigarettes are a way to quit smoking; however, it is uncertain that e-cigarettes help smoking cessation. In addition, existing smoking prevention and anti-smoking policies are facing a challenges due to appearance of e-cigarettes. Questions are being asked regarding the effectiveness of the existing policies on e-cigarettes. Thus, this study aims to examine individual and social factors that influence Korean adolescents¡¯ choice of the type of cigarettes they use. Adolescents who use e-cigarettes have higher family economic status, more experience of secondhand smoke at home and school, cessation intention raised by cigarette pack warning pictures. On the other hand, the number of days of secondhand smoke in public places, and ease of cigarette purchase were negatively associated with the use of e-cigarettes. Lastly, implications for smoking prevention and anti-smoking policies among adolescents were discussed.
